Practical guide to care for your Venetian plaster finishes

Updated: Dec 17, 2024

Cleaning Venetian plaster requires a gentle approach to maintain its luxurious finish.

Here is a practical guide.

1. General Cleaning

Dust Regularly: Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a feather duster to remove dust and prevent buildup.

Avoid Abrasives: Never use abrasive sponges, brushes, or cleaners that could scratch the surface.

Spot Cleaning: For minor stains, dampen a soft cloth with warm water and gently wipe the area. If needed, add a drop of mild dish soap.

2. Dealing with Stains

Immediate Action: Address spills or marks as soon as possible to prevent them from setting.

Mild Solutions: For tougher stains, mix a small amount of pH-neutral soap with water. Gently dab the spot, then rinse with clean water and pat dry.

Test First: Always test cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area to ensure they don’t damage the finish.

3. Protecting the Finish

Avoid Excess Moisture: Venetian plaster is naturally porous. Use minimal water during cleaning and avoid soaking the surface.

Wax Sealing: If your Venetian plaster is sealed with wax, reapply a thin layer of clear wax every 1-2 years to maintain its sheen and protect it from stains.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Stay away from acidic or ammonia-based cleaners, as they can dull or damage the plaster.

4. Preventative Care

Use Wall Guards: In high-traffic areas, consider furniture pads or wall guards to protect the surface from scratches or scuffs.

Control Humidity: Venetian plaster can absorb moisture. Use a dehumidifier in damp environments like bathrooms to prevent damage.

5. Maintenance Tips

Buffing for Shine: If the surface appears dull, lightly buff it with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth or a soft polishing pad.

Repairing Scratches or Chips: Small imperfections can often be repaired with a matching plaster mix. Consult a professional for large or complex repairs.

By following these steps, you’ll ensure your Venetian plaster stays as elegant and beautiful as the day it was applied.
